Today my brand spankin’ new Panasonic Lumix GH1 showed up! Talk about Christmas morning! Those who follow me on Twitter know that I have been waiting for this day for quite some time now. It has been a while since I have personally owned a camera (my last being the Canon GL2, which somehow is still selling for 2800 bucks and is a terrible camera by today’s standards), it just hasn’t seemed worth it recently unless I had 30k to drop on a RED One package, which I didn’t. But finally, Panasonic has released a camera that shoots 1080p at 24fps, takes 12.1 megapixel stills, comes with a GREAT kit lens, makes use of all sorts of lenses (with various adapters) and sells for only $1500!
Now of course this camera ain’t perfect. No camera is. It could have better sound options, it could record at a higher bitrate, blah blah blah. I’m not going to get into all that. That’s what places like DVXuser are for. At the end of the day, this is a phenomenal camera at an incredible price.
So, today Q Manning and I set out to downtown Austin for a meeting and to also get some in-car driving shots for use in Bleutuna Limited and Ranch Studios’ feature film ‘Conflict of Interest.’ Here is a compilation of some shots, some slow motion, some regular speed, some ramping, etc. Now please keep in mind that this footage is 100% raw un-color-corrected and very run and gun with either natural lighting or very limited indoor lighting. This should not be taken as an example of the extents of this camera’s abilities, it should be viewed as a fun little first day spot with the cam. I’m pretty happy with it and cannot wait to see what beautiful images we’ll be able to make with this new tool!
I also took stills with the camera during the day and those will be on the site soon!
