Texas Film Incentives Celebration Photos!

On Saturday, September 12, 2009, WPFG Studios held a great party at 501 Post to celebrate the passing of the Texas Film Incentives! Many wonderful people from the Austin film community were there (including Bleutuna Limited, Paul Alvarado-Dykstra with TXMPA, WPFG, Austin Film Tools, and many more!). The event was live broadcasted to the net and recorded AND edited on the spot. It was a great example of Austin’s talent hard at work even while having a party. There were some amazing music acts as well featuring KJ Hines, Dawn Over Zero, Mini Stylz, Mr. Beez, and Reno Perez. It was a fantastic night and of course, I took a ton of photos! Enjoy!

*Note: My goal tonight was to see if I could sort through 1400 photos, edit the ones I liked and get them out to the world same evening as the event. I may or may not one day go back and re-work some of them, but as I said, my goal was to get them out there. Sort of a pre-cursor to what I’ll be trying to accomplish for 8 days straight at Fantastic Fest!

Panasonic Lumix GH1 Test Shoot

Today my brand spankin’ new Panasonic Lumix GH1 showed up! Talk about Christmas morning! Those who follow me on Twitter know that I have been waiting for this day for quite some time now. It has been a while since I have personally owned a camera (my last being the Canon GL2, which somehow is still selling for 2800 bucks and is a terrible camera by today’s standards), it just hasn’t seemed worth it recently unless I had 30k to drop on a RED One package, which I didn’t. But finally, Panasonic has released a camera that shoots 1080p at 24fps, takes 12.1 megapixel stills, comes with a GREAT kit lens, makes use of all sorts of lenses (with various adapters) and sells for only $1500!

Now of course this camera ain’t perfect. No camera is. It could have better sound options, it could record at a higher bitrate, blah blah blah. I’m not going to get into all that. That’s what places like DVXuser are for. At the end of the day, this is a phenomenal camera at an incredible price.

So, today Q Manning and I set out to downtown Austin for a meeting and to also get some in-car driving shots for use in Bleutuna Limited and Ranch Studios’ feature film ‘Conflict of Interest.’ Here is a compilation of some shots, some slow motion, some regular speed, some ramping, etc. Now please keep in mind that this footage is 100% raw un-color-corrected and very run and gun with either natural lighting or very limited indoor lighting. This should not be taken as an example of the extents of this camera’s abilities, it should be viewed as a fun little first day spot with the cam. I’m pretty happy with it and cannot wait to see what beautiful images we’ll be able to make with this new tool!

I also took stills with the camera during the day and those will be on the site soon!

NOTE: After pressing PLAY click on the HD button to watch in HD!

Happy Father’s Day

This is what I gave my dad for Christmas 2008 (a print of anyway), and I thought I would share it with the world for Father’s Day 2009. When we were making Number Seventy Four in E-Flat, we had cast one of my professors to play the role of “The Conductor” (who was at one point known as ‘The Man in Black’, Dark Tower reference anyone?). He had to back out of the role for ethical reasons the day before shooting. My parents were flying in to Savannah, GA that day to come check out the shoot. In a pinch, I called up my father (who has acted before, Shakespeare and whatnot in college) and asked him if he had a black shirt, black suit and black tie with him. He said “yes.” I said GREAT! I need you to act in the movie, k?!

Well he showed up and gave a terrific performance that many found truly chilling. We had a great time on set and it was incredible to be able to put my dad in my film. Q Manning (producer) and I had discussed doing character one-sheets for the film (similar to the ad campaign with The Matrix Reloaded) but never had the time or money to get all those done (though I would still love to one day). So, for Christmas, I put this together for my dad. (Please pardon the poor graphic design skills, I’m a filmmaker not a designer.)

Hope you enjoy it, and maybe one day we can see some more of these character one-sheets! Happy Father’s Day everybody!

Ringo Deathstarr + ASoF + Dublab

Spent Sunday with Q Manning and a whole bunch of other camera operators and students at the Austin School of Film and Dub Lab music video shoot for the local Austin band, Ringo Deathstarr. Dub Lab (located in LA) is all about taking bands out of their normal environment and putting them somewhere foreign and capturing the performance on video. Today, Ringo Deathstarr played off 7th and Shady Ln in Austin in the middle of a weird rock cluster hole thing surrounded by foliage. I don’t know how to describe it better, honestly.

The great thing about today’s shoot was there were a whole gaggle of students there learning and contributing to the process. Austin School of Film and Dub Lab are hosting an event at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz tonight (Monday) at 10:35pm. The event is described as:

“This matinee has transcended the afternoon and traveled into the night. Leave your body behind and join us for rarely seen music videos, new dublab VisionVersion films, comedy clips, out-there animation and other eye melting magic. This special evening will include a discussion with the curators Frosty & Morpho plus dublab djs playing far out soundtrack selections. Don’t miss these visions burning bright!!!”

Get your tickets here!

And keep your eyes peeled in the next couple weeks for the video to go live!
