Ok, so women everywhere are weighing in on this book turned chick flick. Full disclosure: I got the book when it came out, and I even bought a copy for a friend. At the time I was knee deep in guy woes. We took our copies, highlighted and notated, to Mozart’s for a cup of coffee and some girl talk.

Yes, He’s Just Not That Into You is filled with the hard truths many women know are true but not not able to admit because you want to be the exception. You want to be the woman who turns the toad into a prince. Not that we’re all destined to be oblivious, but we’re known to get so into our heads about men and relationships that we’ll even put up with the most ridiculous behavior from them.

Boy, am I guilty of putting up with some doozies.

Anyway, the movie wasn’t groundbreaking, and it’s certainly not what Mean Girls was to it’s literary inspiration of Queen Bees and Wannabees.

Yes, I teared up in some parts, and yes, it was fun to see so many B and A- stars on the cast but what got me thinking was not the obvious man vs woman dynamic but the woman vs woman dynamic.

I mean the whole reason for these women putting up with these men was the huge amount of enabling done among the women. It’s almost the most dangerous kind of friendship, you want to be sympathetic and support your friend. You don’t want to crush her and you don’t want get in the middle of her personal life. But sometimes you can’t stand seeing her get treated like ass by a man and going back for more, especially when a woman hits her late twenties and the urge to settle down becomes stronger. So she starts doing a bit of relationship math, i.e., ok subtract this bad habit and this bad habit, add this and this, divide this bad habit (cause you don’t want to completely change him, right?), instill a bit of sweetness, maybe add some ambition or cleanliness if needed, what have you, and voilà! She should now have a custom made Mr. Right.

I admit I’m guilty of being a yes woman, my girlfriends are guilty of it. So much to the point that it almost ruined a friendship. My friends are wonderful women and we came to a point where we told each other we’d known each other for too long to not to talk to each other about the hard issues.

My boyfriend and I were talking about this after the movie, and he said guys aren’t like that. They pretty much tell their friends when they are in a bad relationship. I got quiet and remembered all the bad relationships I’d been in, the ones that lasted way longer than they should have. The ones where in my gut I knew they were wrong. No, I’m mot saying that it’s all on the friends to pull you from the fire. In fact, you can be told pretty much anything and you’re still going to do what you’re going to do.

But when it’s over, and you’re friends are rallying behind you on all the things that made him a jerk, how he was bad for you anyway. It’s like, ‘where were you all when I was in the middle of all this crap?’ But that’s fleeting, cause it feels too good to sit at a table with your best girlfriends, you’ve got an audience to complain about the ex-bastard, and the girls want to get you all dressed up for nights on the town.

And all you can do is sigh and put it all in the past because he’s not there anymore and you’re friends are.

It’s done. The Presidential Election of 2008 is done. All the speculation, debates, mudslinging (well, I guess it remains to be seen whether this will ever be done, but quien sabes? )

No matter what brought people out to the polls, no matter the issues: race, the economy, the war, health care, people came out. Period. At a time when it was almost a fact that today’s youth were known to practice ‘bumper sticker politics,’ this election brought a resurgence of awareness that lead to the election booth.

Maybe it was the ‘perfect’ conditions of a ’sour’ presidency, a dynamic new democratic nominee and the surprises coming out of the Grand Ol’ Party that lead to this amazing page in our country’s history. All of that is for you to determine.

Among all the ‘presidential’ pictures of Barack Obama out there, I posted this picture of a young Obama as another reminder to me that the ambitions and dreams we foster in our youth can happen.

So, como Obama via Cesar Chavez: Si se puede :)

this is what hope tastes like…

The photo booth at Abbe’s house. 12:30AM. No pic of the party before at this crazy huge Victorian house off 12th street and Windsor. Met up with Jen there and a whole bunch of actor and film peeps. Q got to get in a really good political debate until the guy walked off. Debating politics makes him happy.

Amy Winehouse was at the party and she let me borrow her hair.
